Assessment for Learning

Working in the classroom

AfL can happen seamlessly in the classroom

Assessment for Learning (AfL) focuses on identifying the next steps in children’s learning and giving feedback to teachers and children. It helps teachers to plan the next steps and helps children to improve their work.

Active Assessment

"An assessment activity can help learning if it provides information to be used as feedback by teachers and their pupils in assessing themselves, to modify the teaching and learning activities in which they are engaged.”
(Black et al 2002)

Children can carry out a number of different tasks that provide the teacher with information that they can use for assessment. The strategies described here are defined as active assessment because they happen during the lesson and engage children actively in their own learning.

To get the best from active assessment, the strategy must be carefully thought through.
