In this topic the children had completed most of the activities and the teacher then asked them to create some resources so they could tell other people about the project that they had done.
This could be given as an open-ended activity, where the nature of the resources produced would then be varied.
Ask the children to consider the different ways we find out about what people have been doing – specific questions would help, covering a range of media:
“How would you know what has been happening at XXX football club?”
“How does the school let parents know when the Summer Fair is taking place?”
“What does a company do to let people know what products it makes and sells?”
Children will suggest things like TV/radio news and adverts, newspapers, magazines, posters, leaflets and so on. This can lead to discussion of how they could present their findings to a target audience, which could be specified by the teacher or chosen by the children. Ask children to think about their target audience, and how that will affect content and style.
There will, of course, be constraints making some solutions impractical, and children may not recognise when they are being too ambitious. Careful steering may sometimes be necessary to ensure they attempt a realistic task.
