Many people link the word industry to a Dickensian view; with mental pictures of factories belching smoke, tedious and dangerous jobs.
Whilst it is true that working conditions, health and safety and age limits may be a cause for concern in some developing countries, legislation in most developed countries imposes strict rules on companies.

The current reality is that industry has changed. Heavy industry has been overtaken by electronics, food, computer, leisure and tourism.
Of course in many areas such as Teeside and Hull, there are large sites housing chemical industries and steelworks, yet in others coal mining, iron and steel have been replaced by business parks, housing, call centres, insurance groups as well as small businesses with under 20 employees.
